Yesterday, after various setbacks, my realtor, Shirley, and I met with the Bill and Clair Clawser and their realtor; pictured above. We signed the closing documents that transferred ownership of the Popular Grove Chapel to Nancy and me.
Bill and Clair are the sons of the man of God who founded and built the church – both the congregation and the building. It was an emotional meeting, especially for Clair, who built much of the rock exterior of the building with his own hands.
Signing the documents was the final step of a life-long journey for the brothers. They have experienced the joys of a dynamic young church and the heartbreak of the church’s demise. Clair was twelve years old when his father started building the church and stood by his side until he died. The congregation dissolved in the mid-1990s and the brothers have looked after the building ever since.
Clair’s weekly habit has been to go into the building each Sunday to pray. Thanks to these brothers, the building has remained a place of worship for five decades.
Nancy and I hope to preserve the character of the building. We intend to do that by repurposing as much of the structure and decor as we can as we transform the physical space into our home. We also hope that our new home will remain a place of worship. May all who enter sense the presence of God there!
